Two stories landed this week that, on the surface, have nothing to do with each other.
The first: Terra Industries, a defense-tech company out of Abuja, just closed the largest seed round any African startup has ever raised — $52 million, stacked up in three tranches since January. They design and manufacture drones and surveillance systems, they've already got a 15,000 sq ft factory running in Abuja, a second one going up in Ghana, and a target of 50,000 units a year by 2028. They're even opening an office in London. By any measure, that's a huge, genuinely impressive milestone for African tech — not another fintech app, not another payments rail, an actual hardware company building actual physical things at actual industrial scale.
The second: memory prices have climbed roughly 500% in the last twelve months. A stick of RAM that would've cost you about $100 last September is pushing $400-plus now, and 128GB of DDR5 will run you $3,399. Why? Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron have all quietly redirected factory capacity away from ordinary consumer memory and toward the high-bandwidth memory that AI datacenters eat for breakfast. Hyperscalers have reportedly already locked up most of next year's global DRAM production. Samsung is telling some customers there's simply no stock.
Put those two stories next to each other and you get something worth sitting with: Terra just signed up to scale hardware manufacturing right as the global electronics supply chain gets bent completely out of shape by Silicon Valley's AI spending. Drones need chips. Chips need memory. Memory is currently being hoovered up by the exact same AI boom that's minting all the headline valuations everyone's busy celebrating.
I'm not saying this to rain on Terra's parade — $52 million is a massive deal and the team has earned the moment. But it's a useful reminder of something we don't talk about enough when we cheer on African hardware startups: the ceiling isn't just capital, or talent, or even market access anymore. It's whether you can get your hands on the same components as everyone else, at a price that doesn't wreck your margins, while giants three time zones away are quietly buying up the entire supply years in advance.
This is the unglamorous part of "building real things" that fintech never had to deal with. A payments app doesn't care if DDR5 costs $3,400 for 128GB. A drone factory very much does.
None of this means Terra fails, or that African hardware manufacturing is doomed. If anything, it's exactly the kind of pressure that forces sharp founders to get creative — local sourcing where possible, different chip architectures, supplier contracts locked in before the next spike. But it's a headwind that never shows up in a funding-round headline, and it's worth remembering next time we're all celebrating a big raise. The money turned out to be the easy part. Getting the actual parts is turning out to be the hard part — for everyone, but especially for the people building furthest from the factories that make them.
